  • An Important Message from the Superintendent

    Dear Parents,

A lot of attention is being paid to the new Netflix series called "13 Reasons Why" which was based on a novel about teen suicide. Many teens have been watching this or may want to watch it as it has become very popular. The series highlights many of the current issues that our children struggle with such as gossip, rumors, social media and sexual assault.   Teens and pre-teens are bombarded with subtle and overt messages on these and related issues from many sources, which can result in confusion, worry and fear.  It is worth talking about these stressors at home so you can reassure your child and help them navigate their world with confidence. This series may or may not be appropriate or of interest to you and your family; but the advice holds true for any such resource.  It is recommended that you watch it first or with your children so you know how to have discussions about it.  You can reach out to our school counselor for additional information on how best to discuss difficult topics with your children.

Here is a link to an article highlighting some concerns with this series that can be incorporated into discussions with your teens if they are watching it.

School Health Guidelines

Dear Parent/Guardian,  If your child will be absent, please call the Nurse's Office at 631-2440, ext. 113.

For the health and well-being of all in our school community, it is important for everyone to be aware that, as per the guidelines set forth by our school district physician, your child must be fever free for 24 hours without medication prior toreturning to school. Please review the following symptoms below which would require your child to stay home from school:

  •  Fever- If your child's temperature is 100 degrees or higher, keep your child home. While at home, encourage your child to drink plenty of liquids. Your child should be fever-free (below 100 degrees) for 24 hours (without medicine) before returning to school.

  • Bad Cough/Cold Symptoms- Children with bad coughs need to stay home, and possibly see a doctor. It could be a severe cold or possibly bronchitis, flu, or pneumonia.

  • Diarrhea or Vomiting- Keep your child home until the illness is over, and for 24 hours after the last episode (without medicine).

  • Sore Throat- A minor sore throat is usually not a problem, but a severe sore throat could be strep throat even if there is no fever. Other symptoms of strep throat in children are headache and stomach upset. Keep your child home from school, and contact a doctor. Your child needs a special test to determine if it is strep throat. He or she can return to school 24 hours after antibiotic treatment begins.

  • Rash- Children with a skin rash should see a doctor, as this could be one of several infectious diseases. One possibility is impetigo, a bacterial skin infection that is very contagious and requires antibiotic treatment. Also, fifth disease is a contagious viral illness spread by coughs and sneezes; it's no longer contagious by the time rash appears.

  • Red, Itchy or Crusty Eye/s-  If conjunctivitis is suspected, a child must be sent home. Parent/Guardian is asked to consult with a physician. Child may return to school when eye drops have been given for a 24 hour period and/or the child has been approved to return to school by their physician.

If you have any questions please contact the nurse’s office @ 914-631-2440, ext. 113.

When checking a head, the tiny white nits differ from dandruff. Dandruff will flake off or move easily; nits are "glued" to the hair shaft and not easily removed by coming or by fingers unless head has been treated.
